Emily Byrd Starr longs to attend Queen's Academy to earn her teaching license, but her tradition-bound relatives at New Moon refuse. She is instead offered the chance to go to Shrewsbury High School with her friends, on two conditions. The first is that she board with her disliked Aunt Ruth, but it is the second that causes Emily difficulties. Emily must not write a word during her high-school education. At first, Emily refuses the offer, unable to contemplate a life without any writing. Cousin Jimmy changes the condition slightly, saying that she cannot write a word of "fiction". Emily does not think this much of an improvement but it turns out to be an excellent exercise for her budding writing career. Although Emily clashes with Aunt Ruth and Evelyn Blake, the school's would-be writer, she starts to develop her powers of storytelling. Through a series of adventures, Emily is furnished with materials to write stories and poems, and even sees success with the short story "The Woman Who Spanked the King." In the meantime, Emily also begins to see romantic possibilities for her life. She and Teddy Kent draw closer, but due to misunderstandings and interference from Teddy's mother, the romance stalls. Emily also refuses a proposal from Perry Miller, and continues her long-lasting friendship with Dean Priest. At the end of the novel, Emily, now a budding young writer, chooses to remain at her beloved New Moon rather than leaving for New York with famous writer Janet Royal.

Emily Climbs edition by Lucy Maud Montgomery Children eBooks

"Emily Climbs" is the middle passage of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Emily" trilogy, set in and near the fictional small town of Shrewsbury in pre-First World War Prince Edward Island. Emily Bird Starr, an orphan being raised by her extended Murray family, is a born writer, an avocation not appreciated by her relatives.

As the story opens, the 14 year-old Emily is offered the opportunity to attend boarding high school away from her home of New Moon Farm. It is a chance to gain an education and to stay with her good childhood chums Ilse, Perry, and Teddy. The price is steep: her Aunt Elizabeth demands she give up fiction writing for the duration, a demand Emily reluctantly accepts.

High school will be a chance to grow. Emily excels in class and advances her writing skills under the tutelage of Mr. Carpenter, a former teacher, and of Dean Priest, a distant relative whose interest in Emily may not be entirely unselfish. The stubborn and pround Emily repeatedly runs afoul of her strict Aunt Ruth, with whom she boards. Emily will experience the sometimes fierce rivalries of adolescence, and the first stirrings of romance, especially with kindred soul Teddy Kent. On the verge of womanhood, Emily will be offered a unique career opportunity that challenges all her assumptions about home and family.

"Emily Climbs" is told with Montgomery's characteristic humor and keen observations of small town humanity. The narrative has a bite to it, not present in the "Anne of Green Gables" series, that may reflect Montgomery's own frustrations as a young writer. "Emily Climbs" is very highly recommended to fans of Lucy Maud Montgomery and the "Emily" Trilogy.

Emily Climbs edition by Lucy Maud Montgomery Children eBooks Reviews

This is one of the books in the L. M. Montgomery trilogy starting with Emily of New Moon and ending with Emily's Quest. It's a delightful series that I would have missed out on if it weren't for my daughter being a voracious reader and huge fan of Lucy Maude Montgomery, the author of the Anne of Green Gables books. I highly reccomend this trilogy for anyone who loves to read period books. It is especially good for young readers in their middle school years. Emily is an orphan like Anne, but not like Anne in that we meet her father briefly before his death and Emily goes to live with relatives. One is more stern and causes the reader to feel compassion for Emily, but there are two others in the house that soften the harshness of the other. And while alot of people would say this was too similar to the Anne books, Emily has a very different personality than Anne so I suggest you give it a try! Another book that L. M. Montgomery wrote that my daughter discovered is The Blue Castle. It's turned out to be a family favorite!
The saga of Emily Star has come to this "Emily's Quest" is the emotional conclusion to Lucy Maud Montgomery's superb "Emily" trilogy, set on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the years before the First World War. The young orphan of "Emily of New Moon" and the earnest young student of "Emily Climbs" has become a young woman in search of love and success.

As the story opens, Emily finds she has been left behind at New Moon Farms. Best friend Ilsa Burnley is off to school in Montreal, while good friend and sometime suitor Perry Miller is learning the law in Charlottetown. Worst of all, Teddy Kent, with whom Emily shares an uncanny bond, leaves for art school after their relationship somehow seems to lose its magic. Emily is left with her writing and with an older mentor, the cynical and manipulative Dean Priest.

Emily suffers a crushing disappointment in her writing, then a near fatal illness. Out of loneliness and near despair, her only option seems to be Dean's offer of marriage. However, a dramatic second-sight experience offers a different road to the future.

If the endpoint of Emily's quest is predictable, the journey is not. Emily will struggle to sell her first book while dealing with some comical distractions. Emily's relationship woes will continue to a cleverly written and entertaining ending.

Lucy Maud Montgomery drew heavily on her own experiences as a struggling writer in the "Emily" series; the story has some real bite, along with the author's characteristic humor and gentle wisdom. "Emily's Quest" is very highly recommended to her fans.
